Machinery safety in the workplace

The continuing safety of your machine operators is the top priority. Plant and machine operators are confronted with the challenge of taking all the necessary safety measures to ensure this safety. Pilz offers you a comprehensive range of services for the standard-compliant analysis and optimisation of your safety status in the workplace.

As a plant operator, Pilz’s plant assessment and subsequent reports provide you with sound information about the safety status of your machinery. That includes recommendations and priorities for any required improvements

Are your production plants constantly undergoing changes? Or do you use new machines alongside older ones? Then you face the challenge of prioritising risk management with regard to health, safety and environmental hazards and of implementing safety strategies.

An analysis of your machines’ workflow will help. That way you can identify the key potential hazards. Based on the safety analysis we show you the additional measures needed to comply with legal requirements.

Our plant assessment of the machinery encompasses an on-site assessment with subsequent evaluation of the machinery’s condition and a formal presentation of our findings. We use a structured risk assessment for this purpose. This approach yields sufficient data and information to enable us to assess the key compliance and safety factors in your plant. All machines are assessed using a multi-parameter analysis. This will give you an estimate and priority list of the safety requirements needed for each machine.

The plant assessment includes:

  • Analysis of the hazards at individual machines
  • Assessment of the existing measures to minimise risk
  • Assessment of the machines’ compliance with applicable regulations
  • Checking the options for implementing safety functions on a machine
  • Priority list and recommendations for how to make improvements on the machinery

Safety concept for machinery

Pilz safety concepts are based on the individual requirements of the customer. Using our tried and tested methodologies, our safety concepts enable safe interaction between operators or maintenance personnel and machinery – without affecting productivity.

To remain competitive, as a manufacturer you need an effective, practicable safety concept when using new machinery or converting an existing machine. This must not restrict your machines’ productivity.

You need a safety concept that’s individually tailored to your requirements. Of course, its implementation should not involve any unnecessary extra work.

Based on the machine risk assessment that has already been carried out, the safety concept is where we develop detailed solution proposals for the technical implementation. That way we guarantee the safety of your machinery in accordance with national and international standards as well as your own corporate standards.

The Pilz safety concept (for machinery) considers:

  • Use of fixed and movable guards
  • Implementation of a safety-related plant and machine controller
  • Devices for safe standstill and shutdown of electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and other potential energy sources
  • Detection of workers in danger zones
  • Definition of the required performance level (PLr) for safety-related measures or safety functions

Hannover Messe

The aim of Industrie 4.0 is to create production processes that save resources and energy. This goes against the customer’s wish for individual products and solutions. So it must be possible to have customised production and yet stay economical. Best of all, at the cost of massed produced items. The solution: modular, flexible plant and machinery, which you can quickly adapt to changing requirements. How? By linking your plant to intelligent IT systems. As a result, plant and machinery become autonomous and self-organising.

The term Industrie 4.0 stands for the fourth industrial revolution, in which industry goes digital. However, we see this revolution more as an evolution because the use of IT to network industry is an ongoing development. A process of change, which all involved stakeholders must support.

The term Industrie 4.0 was first brought to the public domain in 2011 at the Hannover Messe. Since then, numerous associations, platforms and institutions have been working on the implementation of Industrie 4.0. We joined in these activities right from the start, supporting projects with our many years of experience from automation technology.

Automation system for Industry 4.0

The controllers from the automation system PSS 4000 can be used in accordance with the multi-master principle. You can link several controllers with equal authorisation simply via the real-time Ethernet SafetyNet p. SafetyNET p exchanges data and states between the controllers and synchronises them. So every controller knows what the other is doing.

You can program and configure all network subscribers centrally via the software platform PAS4000. The PASvisu visualisation software enables you to always keep an eye on the project. That makes handling your project really simple, however large it is! Now you can always respond swiftly and flexibly to individual customer requirements!
