Safe access to the understage area

The camera is mounted on a slide, which crosses access to the understage area at high speed downstage. Previously, flashing lights had warned of the approaching slide camera. The idea was to optimise this concept, to increase the safety of the stage technicians and exclude manipulation. Today, the danger zone is secured by Pilz’s Type 3 light curtains PSENopt II with hand resolution. Should anyone reach or run into the first pair of light curtains while the camera is moving, the camera slide is stopped immediately. Only once the person has passed through the second light curtain is the zone reset automatically and the slide camera enabled. With this adaptation, the Ehrlich Brothers can happily concentrate on the dramatic composition of their show – for the perfect illusion. http://www.pilz.com

Thermoforming within the safe zone

Senoplast Klepsch manufactures plastic semi-finished products for a range of different applications. A core business area for the Austrian company Senoplast Klepsch is the manufacture of co-extruded senosan® plastic sheets and films for thermoforming. For a smooth-running deep drawing process Senoplast Klepsch relies on the safe radar system PSENradar, which in this case safeguards the production process in an “unorthodox” manner. The focus in production is among other things on quality and safety: the safe radar system was incorporated into the existing controller on the forming machine in order to protect human and machine. http://www.pilz.com

Danger clearly identified

The safe solution applied at EuroChem comprises a radar system and PSSuniversal PLC controller from the automation system PSS 4000. Six radar sensors are attached to each of the conveyor’s six discharge points. They reliably detect all movements in the surrounding area. Each discharge point has its own control unit, which interprets the sensors’ signals and is used to configure the warning and danger zones. PSS 4000 collects the status messages from all the control units, as well as the E-STOP pushbutton and rope pull switch. And a signal tower now displays the respective current hazard status: whether someone is approaching a danger source, whether a sensor is “blanked” – perhaps by an object, which misaligns the sensor – or whether the position of the sensor itself changes, intentionally or by accident – during cleaning work, for example. After the upgrade, efficient workflows and safety are accounted for in equal measure.

Rotary indexing tables

The CGM rotary indexing table is a servo-driven, modular and flexible fully automatic machine. A driven axis is responsible for the movement of the rotary table as well as the vertical and horizontal stroke. The motion control system PMCprimo DriveP specifies the movements and is responsible for the whole motion and safety management of the servo axes, along with three safety cards PMCprotego S for motion monitoring. Today the new solution enables up to 72 cycles per minute, in contrast to the previous 50. It’s also more flexible: to change product, the operator simply selects another program with the required curve profile and in no time the plant is available for another task. Additional benefit: in the event of an emergency stop the drive axes always retain their mechanical cohesion, i.e. the axes always operate synchronously and production can restart without delay. http://www.pilz.com

Operation to run virtually undisturbed

In addition to using PSS 4000, Arcelor Mittal also commissioned Pilz to completely overhaul the plant. One challenge in this modernisation process was the frequent shutting down of the start-up burners that ignite the main burners, which repeatedly led to extended outages. The existing burner control module and flame monitoring via UV cells were not an optimum solution: as soon as one of the cells was defective, the entire plant was often stopped for at least 40 minutes, as the analysis options when searching for the defective UV cell were limited, costing valuable time. The current solution replaces the UV detectors with ionisation; the tasks of the burner control module are performed by the burner management software package from the automation system PSS 4000. Now the processes don’t just run virtually undisturbed – with rapid diagnostic options thanks to efficient visualisation in the control cabinet, which constantly displays the exact status of the 10 burners, longer downtimes are a thing of the past. http://www.pilz.com

Economical test systems

The automated test system from Brainware Solutions tests door trims at an automotive supplier. They are part of the production line, the shortest possible test time is the top priority: only 23 seconds are envisaged for alternately loading and unloading the untested and tested door trims, plus the test itself. The requirement: to guarantee a fast-running test routine, in which operators have unobstructed, safe access to both test system racks, so they can be loaded and unloaded in time. In this case, the safety laser scanner PSENscan, combined with the configurable small controller PNOZmulti 2, offers effective but not obstructive protection, so enabling minimum test times. http://www.pilz.com

About BELANTIS / EVENT PARK GmbH

With 50 permanent staff and up to 700 seasonal and freelance workers, central Germany’s largest amusement park opened its doors in 2003, on the 27 hectare site of the former open cast lignite mine in Zwenkau. Before the gates of Leipzig, visitors to the amusement park – part of EVENT PARK GmbH – have access to eight themed worlds with over 60 attractions and shows, along with various gastronomic offers. These include several roller coasters and water rides, as well as various themed rides, a pirate ship ride, a maze and various fairground rides, a log flume ride, several more fairground rides and imaginative play areas. http://www.pilz.com

Safe, with and without cardboard

Two special optical sensors, installed above the feed opening to scan it, form part of the solution for the safe cardboard feed on the tray former. If these signal that there are insufficient cardboard blanks in the infeed, then PNOZmulti 2 triggers an immediate stop of the hazardous movement. Once the cardboard stocks have been refilled, the machine can be restarted following an acknowledgement. There’s no need for rigid safeguards, so operators have the flexibility to feed the machine from both sides. The safety switches PSENcode are also part of the solution: As many of the blanks are smaller than the opening on the tray former, a precisely contoured perspex screen seals off the uncovered area. This is called up by the tamper-proof, coded safety switch. It’s a total solution, which increases process efficiency and significantly reduces downtimes on the tray former. http://www.pilz.com

Interface with safety guarantee

The particular focus of the safety concept: the new interface between the robot and bending machine, as this poses a variety of risks for the people located there. Firstly, no operator should stand too close while the robot is loading; secondly, the safety concept must guarantee that operator and in particular finger protection is fully reliable when inserting, or when correcting a position by hand. And: the safety device or measure must not hinder the operators as they go about their activities. As both the bending machine and operating robot already had their own separate machine and safety controllers, this project required an integrated and efficient safety solution for this interface. Due to the extensive modularity and therefore flexibility of the myPNOZ, it was possible to achieve the specification of retaining the controller environment, while increasing the productivity and flexibility of the bending machine. http://www.pilz.com
